The Oakland A’s have designated 3B Brooks Conrad for assignment. Conrad played in 6 games for the A’s this season and he was 3 for 19 (.158 avg, .369 OPS) with 2 RBIs. He also whiffed 9 times in only 19 at bats for the A’s and that’s part of the reason why he was designated for assignment. The A’s have also sent down lefty reliever Lenny DiNardo to make room on the roster for 3B/SS Cliff Pennington. DiNardo pitched in 11 games (2 starts) for the A’s this season and he was 1-2 with a 7.43 ERA and a 1.91 WHIP. 24-year old switch hitting Cliff Pennington will battle Jack Hannahan for playing time at 3B. Pennington was the A’s #24 prospect coming into this season according to Baseball America. Pennington has played in 115 games in AA+AAA ball this season and he is 123 for 440 (.280 avg, .756 OPS) with 89 runs scored, 2 homers, 34 RBIs and 31 stolen bases. The A’s need some kind of offensive production at 3B so Pennington could get a long look there. Jack Hannahan has been in a season long funk with the bat and he will start losing playing time unless he gets things turned around soon. Hannahan has played in 108 games for the A’s this season and he is 76 for 342 (.222 avg, .640 OPS) with 37 runs scored, 5 homers and 36 RBIs.
