Cliff Pennington appears to be losing his grip on the starting SS job for the Oakland Athletics

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,In Need of a Slumpbuster by chinmusic on Saturday 29 May 2010 at 2:18 pm

26-year old switch hitting Cliff Pennington came into this season as the full time starting shortstop for the A’s. He has played in 47 games this season and he is 37 of 169 (.219 avg, .635 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 3 homers, 17 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. Pennington’s bat is causing the A’s to rethink about the P.T. at SS. That’s because 27-year old righty swinging Adam Rosales did such a good job filling in for Mark Ellis (who is back) while he was injured. Rosales has played in 44 games for the A’s this year and he is 41 of 146 (.281 avg, .748 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 4 homers and 19 RBIs. The A’s just can’t afford to carry Pennington as the starting SS if he’s not hitting so look for Rosales to steal P.T. from him and he could eventually bump him to the bench.

Justin Duchscherer is out for the year for the Oakland Athletics

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by chinmusic on Saturday 29 May 2010 at 11:22 am

The Oakland A’s have lost 32-year old righty starting pitcher Justin Duchscherer for the season as he needs hip surgery. Duchscherer started 5 games for the A’s this year and he was 2-1 with a 2.89 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. This could be the end of his career with the A’s which would be a shame. He has pitched in 219 games (30 starts) in his seven years with Oakland and he is 32-24 with a 2.82 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP.

The Oakland Athletics might be in the trade market soon

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,If I Were G.M.,Trade Rumors by chinmusic on Monday 24 May 2010 at 2:13 pm

I just don’t see the A’s having the type of offense that G.M. Billy Beane wants right now. He has done a great job of rebuilding the pitching staff with talented young pitchers. But unless he can find some hitters soon it’s going to be a very disappointing year for the A’s. I have a feeling that the A’s wouldn’t mind trying to trade catcher Landon Powell and outfielder Travis Buck (currently on the D.L.) to the Dodgers for outfielder Xavier Paul. The A’s also signed Ben Sheets with the idea of trading him in July if things weren’t going well. I think the A’s would consider trading him to the Nationals for Roger Bernadina or Justin Maxwell. The A’s will also likely move either Craig Breslow or Jeremy Blevins as they are loaded in the pen with lefties. The Yankees, Red Sox and D-Backs would likely be the most interested and maybe even the Rays. The A’s would also like to probably move Rajai Davis who isn’t a “Moneyball” kind of player. The Padres and Marlins would likely be the most interested in Davis.

The Oakland Athletics sign John Halama

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Monday 24 May 2010 at 9:52 am

The A’s have signed 38-year old lefty reliever/starter John Halama to a minor league deal. Halama pitched in 26 games (23 starts) in AAA+Indepenent ball last season and he was 12-8 with a 3.39 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. He last pitched in the majors in 2006 with the Mariners. Halama has pitched in 262 games (119 starts) in his major league career and he is 56-48 with a 4.65 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. It never hurts to sign lefties to stash in the minors so I like this signing for the A’s.

The Oakland Athletics place Eric Chavez on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by chinmusic on Saturday 22 May 2010 at 2:56 pm

The A’s have placed 32-year old lefty swinging DH Eric Chavez on the 15-day disabled list with neck spasms. Chavez has played in 33 games this season for the A’s and he is 26 of 110 (.234 avg, .610 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 1 homer, 10 RBIs and 31 whiffs. 31-year old lefty swinging Jack Cust will replace him as the starting DH and he might not give the job back. Cust has played in 7 games for the A’s this year and he is 7 of 21 (.333 avg, .773 OPS) with 3 runs scored and 2 RBIs. The A’s have activated starting 2B Mark Ellis off the D.L. to replace Chavez on the active roster. Ellis has played in 8 games for the A’s this year and he is 10 of 31 (.323 avg, .769 OPS) with 8 runs scored and 3 RBIs. The A’s are getting closer to full power with Ellis & Crisp coming off the D.L. so we’ll get a closer look as to what they really look like soon.

The Oakland Athletics activate Coco Crisp from the D.L.

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Saturday 22 May 2010 at 2:35 pm

The A’s have activated 30-year old switch hitting CF Coco Crisp from the 15-day disabled list. He led off and played CF for the A’s last night and he was 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBIs. Crisp played in only 2 games on a A-ball rehab assignment as he was 5 for 6 (.833 avg, 1.667 OPS) there with 2 runs scored, a triple, homer and 3 RBIs. The A’s needed Crisp back as he provides some thump and speed at the top of the lineup. The A’s have sent 28-year old switch hitting catcher Landon Powell to AAA to make room on the roster for Crisp. Powell has played in 13 games for the A’s this year and he was 9 of 39 (.231 avg, .644 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 3 RBIs and 1 stolen base. He will get called back to the A’s at some point this season.

UPDATE: (5/27/2010) – The A’s have placed Coco Crisp back on the D.L. with a strained right intercostal muscle. He played in 2 games for the A’s in which he was 2 for 6 (.333 avg, .750 OPS) with a double and 3 RBIs. The A’s have called up Landon Powell to replace him.

The Oakland Athletics need more production out of Kevin Kouzmanoff

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,In Need of a Slumpbuster by chinmusic on Friday 21 May 2010 at 5:42 pm

The A’s were expecting a lot of power out of 28-year old righty swinging 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff after they pried him away from the Padres and Petco Park in a trade over the winter. But he is not hitting the ball well at all for the A’s so far this season. He has played in 41 games for the A’s this season and he is 42 of 163 (.258 avg, .641 OPS) with 18 runs scored, 3 homers and 21 RBIs. Kouzmanoff is also showing a alarming lack of discipline at the dish with 28 whiffs and only 5 walks. The lack of discipline probably concerns A’s G.M. Billy Beane as it’s not the “Moneyball” way of playing offense in baseball.

The Oakland Athletics sign Travis Blackley

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by chinmusic on Friday 21 May 2010 at 12:33 pm

The A’s have signed 27-year old lefty starter/reliever Travis Blackley to a minor league deal. Blackley has pitched in 8 games (1 start) in AAA-ball so far this season andd he is 0-1 with a 9.56 ERA and a 2.06 WHIP. He last pitched in 2007 in the majors with the Giants. He has pitched in 8 games (all starts) in his major league career and he is 1-3 with a 9.35 ERA and a 2.08 WHIP. Blackley might have a hard time getting back to the show but this was still a good signing for the A’s as you can never have enough lefty pitching stashed in the minors.

The Oakland Athletics DFA Chad Gaudin

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Monday 17 May 2010 at 10:50 am

The A’s have designated 27-year old righty reliever Chad Gaudin for assignment. He pitched in 12 games (0 starts) for the A’s this season and he was 0-2 with a 8.83 ERA and a 1.85 WHIP. Gaudin whiffed 20 batters in only 17 1/3 innings for the A’s this season but he allowed 27 hits including 5 homers so it’s no surprise that the A’s are ditching him.

UPDATE: (5/21/2010) – The A’s have released Gaudin after he cleared waivers.

The Oakland Athletics DFA Edwar Ramirez

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Sunday 16 May 2010 at 7:53 am

The A’s have designated 29-year old righty reliever Edwar Ramirez for assignment to make room on the roster for Jack Cust. Ramirez pitched in 7 games (0 starts) for the A’s this season and he was 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP. His control is what got him let go as he has walked 10 batters in only 11 innings. If you have read “Moneyball” you just know that it was a matter of time before this happened.
