The Oakland Athletics acquire Ryan Kelly from the Pirates

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Friday 24 December 2010 at 8:51 pm

The Oakland A’s have acquired 23-year old righty reliever Ryan Kelly from the Pirates for 27-year old IF/OF Corey Wimberly. Kelly pitched in 38 games (1 start) in A-ball last season and he was 2-3 with 4 saves, a 4.20 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. He showed outstanding control by whiffing 75 batters while only walking 14 in his 75 innings in the minors last year. Kelly has now pitched in 81 games (11 starts) in his first four years in the minors and he is 6-7 with 11 saves, 4.74 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. This was a good deal for the A’s as Kelly has a nice upside and youth on his side.

UPDATE: (1/8/2011) - The A’s have flipped Ryan Kelly to the Rangers for Guillermo Moscoso.

The Oakland Athletics sign Fernando Cabrera

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Saturday 18 December 2010 at 5:29 pm

The Oakland Athletics have signed 29-year old righty reliever Fernando Cabrera to a minor league deal. Cabrera pitched in 1 game (0 starts) for the Red Sox last season and he was 0-0 with a 20.25 ERA and a 3.00 WHIP. He also pitched in 54 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Red Sox last season and he was 2-5 with 22 saves, a 3.86 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. Cabrera whiffed 76 batters in only 60 1/3 innings in AAA last season which shows you what kind of stuff he has. Cabrera has now pitched in 132 games (0 starts) in his first seven years in the majors and he is 8-7 with 1 save, a 5.24 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP. He has whiffed 193 batters in only 175 1/3 innings in his major league career but he has also walked 98 batters which is way too many. I like this signing for the A’s because if they can get Cabrera to throw more strikes they might have something here.

The Oakland Athletics claim Philip Humber off waivers

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Friday 17 December 2010 at 2:45 pm

The Oakland A’s have claimed 27-year old righty reliever/starter Philip Humber off waivers from the Royals. Humber pitched in 8 games (1 start) for the Royals last season and he was 2-1 with a 4.15 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. He has now pitched in 26 games (2 starts) in his first five years in the majors and he is 2-1 with a 5.26 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP. Humber will get a shot to make the A’s pitching staff next spring but he’s going to be a longshot.

UPDATE: (1/8/2011) - The A’s have designated Philip Humber for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for newly acquired Guillermo Moscoso.

UPDATE: (1/18/2011) - The A’s have lost Philip Humber on waivers to the White Sox.

The Oakland Athletics acquire Josh Willingham

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Thursday 16 December 2010 at 5:40 pm

The A’s have acquired 31-year old righty swinging LF Josh Willingham from the Nationals for 23-year old righty reliever Henry Rodriguez and 25-year old lefty swinging outfielder Corey Brown. Willingham played in 114 games for the Nationals last season and he was 99 of 370 (.268 avg, .848 OPS) with 54 runs scored, 16 homers, 56 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. Willingham has now played in 663 games in his first seven years in the majors and he is 588 of 2,219 (.265 avg, .841 OPS) with 320 runs scored, 103 homers, 336 RBIs and 25 stolen bases. Willingham will likely hit in the middle of the A’s lineup while starting in LF for the A’s.

Henry Rodriguez pitched in 29 games (0 starts) for the A’s last season and he was 1-0 with a 4.55 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. In his two years with the A’s, Rodriguez pitched in 32 games (0 starts) in which he was 1-0 with a 4.26 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP. Corey Brown played in 131 games in AA+AAA-ball last season and he was 132 of 466 (.283 avg, .836 OPS). In Brown’s four years in the minors with the A’s, he played in 390 games in which he was 388 of 1,425 (.272 avg, .856 OPS) with 239 runs scored, 65 homers, 243 RBIs and 38 stolen bases.

The Oakland Athletics sign Vinnie Chulk

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Wednesday 15 December 2010 at 4:15 pm

The A’s have signed 31-year old righty reliever Vinnie Chulk to a minor league deal. Chulk pitched in 28 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball last season and he was 1-0 with a 4.96 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. He last pitched in the majors back in 2009 with the Cleveland Indians. Chulk has pitched in 252 games (0 starts) in his first seven years in the majors and he is 7-15 with 2 saves, a 4.33 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP. Chulk will be a longshot to make the A’s pen in 2011 but he’ll get chance to do just that in spring training.

The Oakland Athletics sign Rich Harden

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Wednesday 15 December 2010 at 4:12 pm

The Oakland A’s have signed 29-year old righty starting pitcher Rich Harden to a 1-year, $1.5 million dollar deal with another possible $1.5 million bucks that he can earn through incentives. Harden pitched in 20 games (18 starts) for the Rangers last season and he was 5-5 with a 5.58 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP. He had severe control issues last season as he walked 62 batters in only 92 innings. Harden has now pitched in 155 games (145 starts) in his 8 years in the majors and he is 55-34 with a 3.63 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. It will be interesting to see what role the A’s want to use Harden in. I think if he pitches in relief he might have a better chance of staying healthy.

The Oakland Athletics sign Brandon McCarthy

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 14 December 2010 at 10:51 am

The A’s have signed 27-year old righty starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy to a 1-year deal worth $1 million bucks + incentives. McCarthy pitched in 11 games (9 starts) in AAA-ball for the Rangers last season and he was 4-2 with a 3.36 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP. He last pitched in the majors in 2009 with the Rangers. McCarthy has now pitched in 110 games (56 starts) in parts of five years in the majors and he is 20-24 with a 4.56 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. This is a good gamble for the A’s as McCarthy has a nice upside if he can just stay healthy.

The Oakland Athletics sign Hideki Matsui

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Tuesday 14 December 2010 at 10:47 am

The A’s have signed 36-year old lefty swinging DH/LF Hideki Matsui to a 1-year deal. Matsui played in 145 games for the Angels last season and he was 132 of 482 (.274 avg, .820 OPS) with 55 runs scored, 21 homers and 84 RBIs. He has now played in 1,061 games in his first 8 years in the majors and he is 1,109 of 3,830 (.290 avg, .848 OPS) with 591 runs scored, 161 homers, 681 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. I really like this move for the A’s as Godzilla can still swing a good stick.
