Yoenis Cespedes is ripping the ball for the Oakland A’s right now

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Sunday 29 July 2012 at 2:57 pm

A lot of “baseball experts” chuckled when A’s GM Billy Beane gave 26-year old righty swinging outfielder Yoenis Cespedes a huge contract over the winter. But, he who laughs last, laughs the hardest. Cespedes has been red hot with the bat since June 1st, playing in 40 games in which he is 51 of 149 (.342 avg) with 24 runs scored, 9 homers, 32 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. He has been especially hot in July, playing in 21 games in which he is 28 of 82 (.341 avg, 1.003 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 5 homers, 18 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. Cespedes has now played in 68 games overall this year for the A’s and he is 77 of 255 (.302 avg, .902 OPS) with 34 runs scored, 14 homers, 53 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. The A’s hope that Cespedes’ bat stays hot the rest of the year.

The Oakland A’s acquire George Kottaras from the Brewers

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Sunday 29 July 2012 at 8:04 am

The Oakland A’s have acquired 29-year old lefty swinging catcher George Kottaras from the Milwaukee Brewers for 26-year old righty reliever Fautino De Los Santos. Kottaras played in 58 games for the Brewers this year and he was 18 for 86 (.209 avg, .769 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 3 homers and 12 RBIs. A’s GM Billy Beane probably loves the fact that Kottaras isn’t scared to take a walk as he has 29 of them already this year. Kottaras has now played in 222 games in his first five years in the majors and he is 112 of 507 (.221 avg, .728 OPS) with 65 runs scored, 18 homers, 65 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.

Fautino De Los Santos pitched in 6 games (0 starts) earlier this year and he was 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA and a 3.33 WHIP. He pitched in 40 games (0 starts) in his two years with the A’s and he was 3-2 with a 4.21 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP. But, he was having issues in AAA-ball this year. He pitched in 28 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the A’s this year and he was 1-3 with a 7.25 ERA and a 1.81 WHIP.

This trade signals one of two things for the A’s. The A’s are either going to trade Kurt Suzuki before Tuesday afternoon or they are going to send Derek Norris back to AAA. I would bet on a Suzuki deal.

Billy Beane has a lot of ammo to make a couple of deals for the Oakland A’s

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, If I Were G.M. by chinmusic on Friday 27 July 2012 at 11:13 am

The A’s are suddenly in the hunt for a playoff spot, and A’s GM Billy Beane has stockpiled prospects in deals lately. That means he has plenty to offer teams in an attempt to improve at both SS and 3B. Yunel Escobar and Stephen Drew are likely the A’s top targets at SS. If they lost out on both of them, they probably would consider a smaller deal for Jamey Carroll of the Twins. The A’s are also looking for a big upgrade at 3B over Brandon Inge. Chase Headley (Padres) and Aramis Ramirez (Brewers) are likely the top targets at 3B. Headley would cost more prospect wise, while Ramirez would cost more money wise. If the A’s missed out on both of those guys, I think they would consider making a smaller deal for lefty swinging Greg Dobbs, who would platoon with Brandon Inge. The A’s are going to make themselves a better team in the next couple of days, bank on it.

Sean Doolittle has been overpowering so far for the Oakland A’s

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Throwing Well by chinmusic on Tuesday 24 July 2012 at 10:38 am

25-year old lefty reliever Sean Doolittle has been incredible so far this year for the A’s. He has pitched in 15 games (0 starts) for the A’s so far this year and he is 1-0 with 1 save, a 1.86 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP. He has only given up 14 hits and 4 walks while whiffing 29 batters in his first 19 1/3 innings so far this year. Doolittle might just get better as he hasn’t been a pitcher that long, having been a position player early on in his professional baseball career.

The Oakland Athletics place Cliff Pennington on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Saturday 21 July 2012 at 9:37 am

The A’s have placed 28-year old switch-hitting SS Cliff Pennington on the 15-day disabled list due to left elbow tendinitis. Pennington has played in 82 games for the A’s so far this year and he is 56 of 284 (.197 avg, .541 OPS) with 30 runs scored, 3 homers, 16 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. Righty swinging Brandon Hicks and lefty swinging Eric Sogard could platoon at SS until Pennington is ready to return to action. Hicks has played in 12 games for the A’s so far this year and he is 6 for 35 (.171 avg, .559 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 1 homer and 3 RBIs. Sogard has played in 23 games for the A’s so far this year and he is 11 for 73 (.151 avg, .469 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 2 homers, 6 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Shortstop has been a black hole for the A’s so far this year and I look for that to continue unless they made a deal before the trade deadline.

Chris Carter is ripping the ball for the Oakland A’s

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Thursday 19 July 2012 at 4:11 pm

25-year old righty swinging Chris Carter is on fire with the bat for the A’s since they have called him up. He has played in 11 games for the A’s so far this year and he is 9 for 29 (.310 avg, 1.307 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 5 homers and 9 RBIs. He is also showing improved patience at the plate as he has walked 7 times so far this year. Carter has now played in 50 games in his first three years with the A’s and he is 28 for 143 (.196 avg, .653 OPS) with 20 runs scored, 8 homers, 16 RBIs and 1 stolen base. The A’s are protecting Carter this time around as he has pretty much been platooning with Brandon Moss at 1B.

The Oakland A’s have signed Matt McSwain

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Thursday 19 July 2012 at 11:51 am

The A’s have signed 26-year old righty reliever/starter Matt McSwain to a minor league deal. McSwain pitched in 19 games (6 starts) in AA-ball for the Pirates this year and he was 4-2 with a 4.88 ERA and a 1.68 WHIP. He has now pitched in 164 games (61 starts) in his first seven years in the minors and he is 33-23 with 7 saves, a 3.76 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. It will be interesting to see if he ever gets to Oakland as the odds are against him.

The Oakland Athletics release Luke Hughes

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Wednesday 18 July 2012 at 8:26 am

The Oakland A’s have released 27-year old righty swinging infielder Luke Hughes. Hughes played in 4 games for the A’s this year and he was 1 for 13 (.077 avg, .154 OPS). He also played in 42 games in AA+AAA-ball for the A’s this year and he was 29 for 130 (.223 avg, .654 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 3 homers, 15 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Hughes has played in 8 games overall this year for the Twins & A’s in which he was 3 for 23 (.130 avg, .255 OPS) with 2 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Hughes was just taking up space in the minors, so the A’s won’t miss him at all moving forward.

Jonny Gomes has been ripping the ball lately for the Oakland A’s

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Monday 16 July 2012 at 2:32 pm

31-year old righty swinging outfielder Jonny Gomes could be in line for more P.T. in the near future if he keeps ripping the ball like he is right now. Gomes has played in 22 games in June and July so far and he is 17 of 55 (.309 avg) with 12 runs scored, 5 homers and 14 RBIs. He has now played in 57 games for the A’s overall this year and he is 39 of 155 (.252 avg, .851 OPS) with 27 runs scored, 10 homers, 28 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Gomes has whiffed 58 times already this year, but that has always been his M.O. But, when Gomes is hot…..he can hit anybody.

The Oakland A’s have released Erick Threets

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Sunday 15 July 2012 at 7:03 pm

The A’s have released 30-year old lefty reliever Erick Threets at his request. Threets pitched in 34 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the A’s this year and he was 4-2 with 3 saves, a 1.84 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. Threets has pitched in 21 games (0 starts) in his first three years in the majors and he is 0-1 with a 3.28 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP. Threets should have little problem finding another team willing to give him a shot based on how he has been pitching this year.
