Bob Melvin of the Oakland A’s is named the A.L. Manager of the Year

Blogged under Awards, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Thursday 22 November 2012 at 6:24 pm

51-year old manager Bob Melvin has been named the 2012 A.L. Manager of the Year. He narrowly beat out Buck Showalter of the Orioles, but he deserved to win the award. No one thought the A’s were going to be worth a damn in 2012 and Melvin led them to the A.L. West title. The A’s were 94-68 (58%) during the regular season and they were 2-3 in the playoffs. Melvin is now 141-120 (54%) in his first two years as the manager of the A’s. I look for him to continue to get the most out of the roster that GM Billy Beane gives him.

Parker gave up 166 hits and he walked 63 batters while whiffing 140 of them in 181 1/3 innings last year. Those are some pretty impressive numbers and he is just going to get better.

Yoenis Cespedes of the Oakland A’s finished 2nd in the Rookie of the Year voting

Blogged under Awards, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Wednesday 21 November 2012 at 8:43 pm

27-year old righty swinging outfielder Yoenis Cespedes finished 2nd for the Rookie of the Year Award and he was also #10 in MVP voting in the A.L. Cespedes played in 129 games for the A’s last year and he was 142 of 487 (.292 avg, .861 OPS) with 70 runs scored, 23 homers, 82 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. A’s GM Billy Beane was openly questioned by a lot of “experts” when he gave Cespedes a big deal last winter, but who is laughing now? Beane as usual. Cespedes is going to make a real run at the MVP Award in 2013, if he can stay healthy.
