Gary Daley of the Oakland A’s gets suspended for 50 games

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by joelapinski on Wednesday 30 January 2013 at 5:15 pm

27-year old righty starter/reliever Gary Daley has been suspended for 50 games due to testing positive for PEDs.  He pitched in 34 games (18 starts) in AA-ball last year for the A’s and he was 10-10 with 2 saves, a 5.11 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP.  Daley has now pitched in 178 games (114 starts) in his first seven years in the minors and he is 35-50 with 2 saves, a 5.91 ERA and a 1.75 WHIP.  This isn’t much of a loss for the A’s and it could cost Daley his job.

The Oakland A’s have acquired John Jaso from the Mariners in a three team deal

The Oakland A’s have acquired 29-year old lefty swinging catcher John Jaso from the Mariners in a three team deal also involving the Washington Nationals. The A’s have sent 21-year old righty starting pitcher A.J. Cole, 24-year old righty starter/reliever Blake Treinen and a player to be named later to the Nationals for Jaso. The Nationals dealt outfielder Mike Morse to the Nationals to complete this deal.

Jaso played in 108 games for the Mariners last year and he was 81 of 294 (.276 avg, .850 OPS) with 41 runs scored, 10 homers, 50 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. Jaso has now played in 311 games in his first four years in the majors and he is 227 of 889 (.255 avg, .754 OPS) with 126 runs scored, 20 homers, 121 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. Jaso played in 43 games (39 starts) behind the plate for the Mariners last year and he didn’t have any errors, but he did have five passed balls. He also threw out 6 of 33 (18.2%) base runners trying to steal on him last year and Mariners’ pitchers had a 3.41 ERA with him behind the dish. Jaso will platoon with Derek Norris behind the plate in 2013.

A.J. Cole came to the A’s in the big Gio Gonzalez deal with the Nationals last winter. Cole pitched in 27 games (all starts) in his only year with the A’s in A-ball and he was 6-10 with a 3.70 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. Blake Treinen pitched in 24 games (15 starts) in A-ball for the A’s last year and he was 7-7 with a 4.37 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. He pitched in 45 games (15 starts) in his two years in the minors for the A’s and he was 8-8 with 2 saves, a 4.13 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. The A’s gave up a lot of talent for a platoon catcher.

The Oakland A’s DFA George Kottaras

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Wednesday 23 January 2013 at 3:43 pm

The A’s have designated 29-year old lefty swinging catcher George Kottaras. Kottaras played in 27 games for the A’s last year and he was 18 of 85 (.212 avg, .750 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 6 homers and 19 RBIs. He played in 85 games overall last year for the Brewers and A’s in which he was 36 of 171 (.211 avg, .766 OPS) with 20 runs scored, 9 homers and 31 RBIs. He has now played in 249 games in his first five years in the majors and he is 130 of 592 (.220 avg, .732 OPS) with 75 runs scored, 24 homers, 84 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Kottaras played in 54 games (49 starts) behind the plate for the A’s and Brewers in which he only threw out 2 of 40 (5%) base stealers last year and pitchers had a 4.50 ERA with him behind the plate. The recent acquisition of John Jaso from the Mariners made Kottaras expendable.

Catcher will likely be a timeshare position for the Oakland A’s in 2013

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Positional Preview for Season by chinmusic on Wednesday 16 January 2013 at 9:18 am

The A’s aren’t likely going to go with a straight platoon at catcher in 2013, as they think 23-year old righty swinging Derek Norris is their possible catcher of the future. Norris played in 60 games for the A’s last year and he was 42 of 209 (.201 avg, .625 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 7 homers, 34 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. He whiffed 66 times last year for the A’s too, so he had a lot of trouble making contact, despite showing pretty good power. Norris also played in 58 games in AAA-ball for the A’s last year in which he was 59 of 218 (.271 avg, .806 OPS) with 39 runs scored, 9 homers, 38 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. Norris played in 58 games (53 starts) behind the plate for the A’s last year and he had 5 errors and 4 passed balls. Norris only threw out 6 of 40 (15%) runners trying to steal against him last year, but A’s pitchers had a 3.10 ERA with him behind the dish. 29-year old lefty swinging George Kottaras will share time with Norris behind the plate.
