35-year old righty closer Grant Balfour of the Oakland A’s has been added to the A.L. All-Star Team to replace Bartolo Colon (he started Sunday’s game).  Balfour has pitched in 40 games (0 starts) for the A’s so far this year and he is 0-1 with 25 saves, a 1.63 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP.  Balfour has given up 27 hits and 13 walks while whiffing 41 batters in his first 38 2/3 innings so far this year, which is very, very impressive.  Balfour has now pitched in 177 games (0 starts) in his first three years with the A’s and he is 8-5 with 51 saves, a 2.31 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP.  Balfour is already tied for 1oth in A’s history in saves (51) with Hall of Famer Lefty Grove.

40-year old righty starting pitcher Bartolo Colon has been amazing so far in 2013.  He has pitched in 16 games (all starts) for the A’s so far this year and he is 11-2 with a 2.79 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP.  He has given up 102 hits and 13 walks while whiffing 61 batters in his first 106 1/3 innings which is impressive.  Colon has now pitched in 40 games (all starts) in his first two years with the A’s and he is 21-11 with a 3.17 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP.  Colon’s name has popped up concerning the Biogenesis Lab in Miami, and that has to worry the A’s.

UPDATE:  (7/8/2013) - Bartolo Colon is heading to the All-Star Game as the A’s only representative.  Colon has pitched in 17 games (all starts) for the A’s so far this year and he is 11-3 with a 2.78 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP.

25-year old righty reliever Ryan Cook will be the A’s only representative of the A’s at the All-Star Game in 2012. Cook has pitched in 35 games (0 starts) for the A’s so far this year and he is 2-2 with 7 saves, a 1.54 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP. Cook has only given up 12 hits while whiffing 37 batters in his first 35 innings this year, which is impressive….but, he has also walked 21 batters which has gotten him in trouble at times. This will be Cook’s first All-Star Game appearance.
