Sean Manaea is back on track for the Oakland A’s

24-year old lefty starting pitcher Sean Manaea came into this season as the Oakland A’s #2 prospect according to Baseball America.  He started out his rookie season getting welcomed to the Major Leagues rudely by opposing hitters.  But he has made some adjustments and he has pitched really well since June 1st.  Manaea has pitched in 9 games (8 starts) since June 1st for the A’s and he is 2-2 with a 3.13 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 15 games (14 starts) for the A’s overall this year and he is 3-5 with a 4.57 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP>  He has given up 92 hits and 20 walks while whiffing 75 batters in his first 86 2/3 innings of his Major League career.  The A’s hope that Manaea continues to improve the rest of the way in 2016.

Rollie Fingers was awesome for the Oakland A’s

Righty reliever Rollie Fingers was pretty awesome for the Oakland A’s!  Fingers pitched in 502 games (37 starts) in his nine years with the A’s and he was 67-61 with 136 saves, a 2.91 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. Fingers gave up 860 hits and 293 walks while whiffing 784 batters in his 1,016 innings pitched for the A’s.  Fingers also pitched in 27 games (0 starts) in the playoffs for the Oakland A’s and he was 3-4 with 8 saves, a 2.22 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP.  He gave up 43 hits and 16 walks while whiffing 40 batters in 52 2/3 innings in the playoffs.  Fingers helped the A’s win the World Series in 1972, 1973 and 1974.  He was MVP of the 1974 World Series in which the A’s beat the Dodgers!  Fingers was a 4-time All-Star for the A’s and he was elected into Baseball’s Hall of Fame in 1992.

Fingers’ best two years for the A’s came in 1973 and 1975.  He pitched in 62 games (0 starts) in 1973 for the A’s and he was 7-8 with 22 saves, a 1.92 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP.  He only gave up 107 hits and 39 walks while whiffing 110 batters in his 126 2/3 innings in 1973.  In 1975, Fingers finished 3rd in the voting for the Cy Young Award.  Fingers pitched in a Major League leading 75 games (0 starts) in 1975 for the A’s and he was 10-6 with 24 saves, a 2.98 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP.  Fingers gave up 95 hits and 33 walks while whiffing 115 batters in his 126 2/3 innings for the A’s in 1975.

Fingers is still #2 in A’s history with his 136 saves!  He is also #3 in games pitched (502), #11 in ERA (2.91), tied for #24 in wins (67), #7 in WHIP (1.14), #31 in innings pitched (1,016) and he is #13 in strikeouts (784) in A’s history!

The Oakland A’s have released Carson Blair

The Oakland A’s have released 26-year old righty swinging catcher Carson Blair.  Blair played in 23 games in A+AA+AAA-ball for the A’s this year and he was 27 of 81 (.333 avg, .888 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 3 homers and 14 RBIs.  Blair got his first taste of the show with the A’s last year, when he played in 11 games for them and he was 4 for 31 (.129 avg, .454 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 1 homer and 3 RBIs.  He did whiff 18 times last year with the A’s, so he was overmatched.  This isn’t much of a loss for the A’s.  At the same time, Blair should have little problem finding a new team to play for.

The Oakland A’s have sent Tyler Ladendorf back to AAA

The Oakland A’s have sent 28-year old righty swinging IF/OF Tyler Ladendorf to AAA.  He has played in 35 games for the A’s so far this year and he is 3 for 36 (.083 avg, .191 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 0 homers, 1 RBI and 1 stolen base.  Ladendorf has now played in 44 games in his first two years with the A’s and he is 7 for 53 (.132 avg, .333 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 0 homers, 3 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  The A’s better make Ladendorf earn his next promotion to the show, as he has not proven ready for prime time so far in his career.

The Oakland A’s place Andrew Triggs on the D.L.

The Oakland A’s have placed 27-year old righty reliever Andrew Triggs on the 15-day disabled list due to a left leg contusion.  Triggs has pitched in 16 games (1 start) for the A’s so far this year and he is 0-0 with a 5.83 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP.  Triggs has given up 37 hits (4 homers) and 9 walks while whiffing 30 batters in his first 29 1/3 innings for the A’s so far this year.  He has gotten hit pretty hard in his first year in the show.

The Oakland A’s call up a couple of lefty pitchers

The Oakland A’s have called up 24-year old lefty starting pitcher Dillon Overton and 26-year old lefty reliever Daniel Coulombe.  Overton has pitched in 2 games (both starts) for the A’s so far this year and he is 1-1 with a 11.42 ERA and a 2.31 WHIP.  He has given up 15 hits and 5 walks while whiffing 4 batters in his first 8 2/3 innings this year, so he has gotten a rude welcome to Major League baseball so far!  Coulombe has pitched in 13 games (0 starts) so far this year and he is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP.  He has given up 18 hits and 5 walks while whiffing 15 batters in his first 18 innings so far this year.

Ryan Dull has been very impressive so far this year for the Oakland A’s

26-year old righty reliever Ryan Dull came into this season as the Oakland A’s #21 ranked prospect according to Baseball America.  Dull has pitched in 42 games (0 starts) for the A’s so far this year and he is 3-2 with 1 save, a 1.90 ERA and a 0.72 WHIP.  Dull has given up 24 hits and 10 walks while whiffing 48 batters in his first 47 1/3 innings for the A’s so far this year.  Dull has now pitched in 55 games (0 starts) in his first two years with the A’s and he is 4-4 with 2 saves, a 2.52 ERA and a 0.81 WHIP.  Dull could wind up being the closer in the near future for the A’s, depending on what goes on between now and the trade deadline.

The Oakland A’s acquire Ross Detwiler from the Indians

The Oakland A’s have acquired 30-year old lefty reliever/starter Ross Detwiler from the Cleveland Indians for cash considerations.  Detwiler pitched in 7 games (0 starts) for the Indians this year and he was 0-0 with a 5.79 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP.  Detwiler has now pitched in 180 games (76 starts) in his first 9 years in the show and he is 21-37 with 1 save, a 4.21 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP.  This move just proves that if you throw with your left arm, teams will take a chance on you.

The Oakland A’s send Billy Burns to AAA

The Oakland A’s have sent 26-year old switch-hitting outfielder Billy Burns to AAA.  Burns played in 73 games for the A’s this year and he was 64 of 274 (.234 avg, .573 OPS) with 32 runs scored, 0 homers, 12 RBIs and 14 stolen bases.  Burns has now played in 211 games in his first three years with the A’s and he is 218 of 800 (.273 avg, .671 OPS) with 106 runs scored, 5 homers, 54 RBIs and 43 stolen bases.  The A’s needed Burns’ roster spot to promote 3B/1B Ryon Healy.  Burns should be back with the A’s later this year, but he is going to have to show something in AAA first.

The Oakland A’s DFA Nick Tepesch

The Oakland A’s have designated 27-year old righty starting pitcher Nick Tepesch for assignment.  Tepesch pitched in 3 games (all starts) in AAA-ball for the A’s this year and he was 1-1 with a 5.51 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP.  Tepesch has pitched in 43 games (40 starts) in his first three years in the show and he is 9-18 with a 4.68 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP.  The A’s needed a roster spot for 3B/1B Ryon Healy and that is why Tepesch lost his spot on the 40-man roster.

UPDATE:  (7/18/2016) – The A’s have lost Nick Tepesch on waivers to the Royals.
