The Oakland A’s are getting solid production from their catchers again in 2016

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Playing Well by joelapinski on Saturday 30 April 2016 at 10:38 am

Last year the Oakland A’s got outstanding production offensively from their catchers.  31-year old lefty swinging Stephen Vogt and 28-year old righty swinging Josh Phegley combined to go 172 of 670 (.257 avg) with 85 runs scored, 27 homers and 105 RBIs in 2015.  They are at it again this year.  Vogt has played in 21 games for the A’s so far this year and he is 19 of 75 (.253 avg, .750 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 3 homers and 6 RBIs.  Phegley has played in 7 games for the A’s so far this year and he is 8 of 23 (.348 avg, .766 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 0 homers and 1 RBI.  The power has been a little behind schedule so far out of these two, but I don’t expect that to last.

Sam Fuld is done for the year for the Oakland A’s

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by joelapinski on Friday 29 April 2016 at 6:33 pm

34-year old lefty swinging outfielder Sam Fuld needs surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff and he will miss the rest of the way in 2016 for the Oakland A’s.  Fuld didn’t play at all this year for the A’s.  Fuld played in 120 games for the A’s in 2015 and he was 57 of 290 (.197 avg, .569 OPS) with 34 runs scored, 2 homers, 22 RBIs and 9 stolen bases.  Fuld has played in 180 games in his two years with the A’s and he is 96 of 477 (.201 avg, .583 OPS) with 59 runs scored, 5 homers, 41 RBIs and 18 stolen bases.  The A’s won’t miss Fuld too much, as he just can’t hit.

The Oakland A’s have placed 27-year old righty starting pitcher Chris Bassitt on the 15-day disabled list due to a right elbow strain.  Bassitt has pitched in 5 games (all starts) for the A’s so far this year and he is 0-2 with a 6.11 ERA and a 1.75 WHIP.  Bassitt has worked 28 innings so far this year and he has given up 35 hits (5 homers) and 14 walks while whiffing 23 batters!  He has been getting hit really, really hard lately.  I’m surprised that he didn’t go on the D.L. due to whiplash!

UPDATE:  (4/29/2016) – The A’s have sent back Matt McBride to AAA.  He didn’t play for the A’s this time around and they have called Andrew Triggs back up.

The Oakland Athletics are getting great work out of John Axford

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Throwing Well by joelapinski on Tuesday 26 April 2016 at 11:03 am

The Oakland A’s were sneaky in how they re-built the back end of their bullpen over the winter by locking up hard throwing ex-closers.  One of them was 33-year old righty reliever John Axford.  Axford pitched in 60 games (0 starts) for the Colorado Rockies last year and he was 4-5 with 25 saves, a 4.20 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP.  Axford has now pitched in 9 games (0 starts) for the A’s so far this year and he is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.80 WHIP.  He has only given up 8 hits and he has yet to walk a batter while whiffing 5 in his first 10 innings with the A’s.  He is looking great so far for the A’s!

Jesse Hahn is off to a good start in the minors for the Oakland A’s

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by joelapinski on Friday 22 April 2016 at 8:22 am

26-year old righty starting pitcher Jesse Hahn lost his rotation spot in spring training for the Oakland A’s.  Instead of sulking about it, he’s pitching his butt off in AAA, trying to work his way back to Oakland.  He has pitched in 3 games (all starts) in AAA-ball for the A’s so far this year and he is 0-0 with a 0.63 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP.  Hahn pitched in 16 games (all starts) for the A’s last year and he was 6-6 with a 3.35 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP.  Hahn has now pitched in 30 games (28 starts) in his first two years in the show and he is 13-10 with a 3.23 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP.  If Hahn keeps up the good work, he will be pitching again for the A’s in the near future.
