The Oakland A’s have activated 32-year old switch-hitting 2B Jed Lowrie off the D.L.  Lowrie has played in 32 games so far this year for the A’s and he is 35 of 116 (.302 avg, .686 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 0 homers and 17 RBIs.  Lowrie has now played in 322 games in his first three years with the A’s and he is 335 of 1,221 (.274 avg, .733 OPS) with 149 runs scored, 21 homers, 142 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  The A’s have to be glad that Lowrie is back, as he has been very effective for them offensively so far this year.

The Oakland A’s will call up 27-year old righty starting pitcher Zach Neal on Wednesday and he will get the first shot to replace Sonny Gray in the starting rotation.  Neal has pitched in 7 games (all starts) in AAA-ball so far this year for the A’s and he is 5-1 with a 2.53 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP.  He has given up 36 hits and 4 walks while whiffing 21 batters in his first 42 2/3 innings in the minors.  Neal has pitched in 1 game out of the pen for the A’s so far this year and he is 0-0 with a 9.00 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP.

The Oakland A’s have placed 26-year old righty starting pitcher Sonny Gray on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 21st due to a strained right trapezius muscle.  Gray has pitched in 9 games (all starts) for the A’s so far this year and he is 3-5 with a 6.19 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP.  He has given up 55 hits (8 homers) and 24 walks while whiffing 41 batters in his first 48 innings, so he has getting hit hard this year.  He also has a Major League leading 9 wild pitches, which isn’t like him.  The A’s have called up 26-year old lefty reliever Daniel Coulombe to replace Gray on the pitching staff for now.  He pitched in 1 game (out of the pen) for the A’s earlier this year and he was 0-0 with a 13.50 ERA and a 2.50 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 10 games (0 starts) in his first two years with the A’s and he is 0-0 with a 5.59 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP.  The A’s hope that Gray won’t be out too long.

Rich Hill is rewarding the Oakland A’s

When the Oakland A’s signed 36-year old lefty starting pitcher Rich Hill to a 1-year, $6 million dollar deal…..it raised a lot of eyebrows around the league.  But, Hill is rewarding the A’s so far this year as he is pitching great.  Hill has pitched in 9 games (all starts) so far this year for the A’s and he is 6-3 with a 2.54 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP.  Hill has only given up 35 hits and 21 walks while whiffing 59 batters in his first 49 2/3 innings this year.  He has now pitched in 13 games (all starts) in his last two years in the show and he is 8-4 with a 2.17 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP!  Those are amazing numbers for Hill, as he is surging to excellence late in his career.  He has now pitched in 210 games (83 starts) in his first 12 years in the show and he is 32-26 with a 4.36 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP.  The A’s hope that Hill can keep up the good work!

The Oakland A’s are going to need more out of Coco Crisp

With Josh Reddick out for the next 4-6 weeks, it would be nice if 36-year old switch-hitting outfielder Coco Crisp could step up his game.  Crisp has played in 32 games for the A’s so far this year and he is 27 of 115 (.235 avg, .702 OPS) with 18 runs scored, 3 homers, 13 RBIs and 4 stolen bases.  He has now played in 76 games in his last two years and he is 49 of 241 (.203 avg) with 29 runs scored, 3 homers, 19 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.  He has been dealing with neck issues the last couple of years, so it’s doubtful that he can start full time.  The A’s just hope that he can start hitting like he used to when he first got to Oakland.

The Oakland A’s lose Josh Reddick for a while

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by joelapinski on Friday 20 May 2016 at 9:17 am

29-year old lefty swinging RF Josh Reddick fractured his left thumb in last night’s game and he will miss the next 4-6 weeks.  This is a HUGE blow for the Oakland A’s!  Reddick has played in 41 games for the A’s so far this year and he is 47 of 146 (.322 avg, .860 OPS) with 21 runs scored, 5 homers, 18 RBIs and 4 stolen bases.  He has played in 569 games in his first five years with the A’s and he is 521 of 2,031 (.257 avg, .762 OPS) with 280 runs scored, 81 homers, 290 RBIs and 35 stolen bases.  The A’s are going to miss Reddick’s bat and his aggressive play!

Khris Davis brought his whopping stick with him last night for the Oakland A’s

28-year old righty swinging outfielder Khris Davis brought his whooping stick with him last night for the Oakland A’s!  Davis was 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored, 3 homers and 6 RBIs in the A’s 8-5 win over the Texas Rangers.  He hit a walkoff grand slam off of Rangers’ then closer (he has been replaced by Sam Dyson) Shawn Tolleson.  His other two homers were solo blasts off of Cole Hamels.  So that was some very impressive work!  Davis has now played in 37 games for the A’s so far this year and he is 33 of 145 (.228 avg, .746 OPS) with 16 runs scored, 11 homers and 28 RBIs.  He is leading the A’s in both homers (11) and RBIs (28) so far this year.  He is also tied for 3rd in runs scored (16) on the A’s.  He has only walked 3 times while whiffing 38 times so far this year for the A’s, but they will put up with that in return for the power that he provides!
